Simple Homestyle Biscuits
Updated: Dec 29, 2021
I am super fond of this recipe because growing up my dad would always make these with a big pot of homemade stew. They remind me of him every time I bake a batch for my family, which is often because we love homemade soups and stews so much.

I always like to try and make a big fresh batch of some sort of soup to pick away at during the week. Weather it's chili, broccoli soup, coconut curry or a wholesome chicken noodle, its a great backup for those rushed dinner days. These biscuits take like five minutes to whip up and 20 minutes to bake so they are a great, quick side. You can also add all kinds of fun things to them. I like to add apple & cinnamon, cheddar & chives, or sometimes i even add some pasta sauce and Parmesan cheese and fresh garlic. YUMMY!!!

There are basically 2 rules when it comes to making these. Number one is to either cut them using a sharp knife or a cookie cutter, do not use a cup as it compresses the air out of them and they end up flat. The other rule is to handle them very little! Once you add the milk, mix for a couple seconds until JUST combined. your dough should look shaggy and messy. Other then that, this is seriously the easiest dinner type bun to make in a pinch. So lets get started, below you will find my recipe for amazingly fluffy, fresh homestyle biscuits.
Homestyle Biscuits
Prep time: 5 minutes
Bake time: 20 minutes
Serves: 12 medium sized biscuits
Ingredients
2 cups of all purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup chilled butter
1 cup of milk
Directions
1. preheat your oven to 425 degrees and then line a baking sheet with some parchment.
2. First mix up all your dry ingredients, you can use a stand mixer with a paddle attachment or mix by hand.
3. Add your butter and mix until it looks fine and crumbly. Once the butter is mixed this is a good time to add any extras you might have like cheese.
4. Add the milk and mix until JUST combined. Remember the secret here is to handle the dough as little as possible!
5. Finally you can press the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, cut 2.5x2.5 inch pieces out and place on your lined tray or you can skip the pressing and tear similar sized pieced directly from your mixing bowl and place those on your tray. Option one gives a more uniformed look, option 2 is faster and less mess. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden.
Tips & Tricks
You can use pretty much any kind of milk to these, but use real COLD butter for best results. You want to make sure you don’t handle the dough too much so make sure and mix the milk until just combined. Cut them with a knife or cookie cutter, avoid using a cup as It deflates them.
